About Iowa State University and EcpE

Electrical Engineering first started off in 1891 as a joint program between Physics and Electrical Engineering. The program soon took off; getting its own official program in 1909 and later in 1939 was the site of the first digital logic computer created by John Vincent Atanasoff was at Iowa State University. From work done by Mervin S. Coover in world war one with electronics lead to the construction Coover Hall in the 1950’s the first building dedicated to electrical engineering program. Some 25 years later in 1976 Electrical Engineering split and presented Computer Engineering. In Computer Engineering students were taught, design aspects and mechanical ends of computers. In 1981 the Electrical Engineering department hired its first full time academic adviser Sheldon Pinsky. Soon after that in 1984 the department Electrical and Computer Engineering fell under the name EcpE(Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering). By todays the department is still growing with upwards of 1,500 undergraduates. The department also added another degree in 2006 for Software Engineering.
An Iowa State Alumni and current member of IEEE states

"Iowa State has had a Student Branch at Iowa State for 61 of the 100 years. Not only that, but Iowa State had a Student branch of a predecessor organization of the IEEE called IRE (Institute of Radio Engineers since 1903. In fact, they were the 5th student branch of the organization. Thus the student branch has roots that are 6 years older than the EE department."
